Aujourd’hui je vous emmène au Royaume-Uni, au Westonbirt Arboretum dans le comté rural de Gloucestershire, localisé à 3 heures à l’Est de Londres.
Le programme était de concevoir deux nouveaux bâtiments pour le Wolfson Tree Management Centre : un réfectoire et un hangar pour le rangement du matériel. Mais pourquoi publier un bâtiment agricole me direz-vous ? Celui-ci n’a rien à voir avec ceux construit par EDF pour nos agriculteurs français. Cet hangar a été construit avec les arbres du site, des bois verts à l’état brut ! Mais avant d’entrer dans les particularités techniques qui donnent tout le romantisme au projet, intéressons-nous au point de départ du projet.
Le contexte du projet
L’arboretum de Westonbirt est un domaine de 240 hectares établi en 1850, il possède une grande variété d’essence d’arbres. Ce centre a bénéficié d’un programme de subvention afin de redonner un attrait touristique au lieu. La première phase du projet a donné lieu à une infrastructure livrée par Glenn Howells Architects qui emmène les visiteurs dans une déambulation à travers la forêt ainsi que d’un bâtiment d’accueil dessiné par le même architecte. Le reste de l’enveloppe est destiné aux deux bâtiments conçus par Invisible Studio.
Le parti pris architectural
L’architecte Piers Taylor, fondateur de l’agence Invisible Studio, est un spécialiste de la construction bois, il a réalisé plusieurs bâtiments qui entretiennent une relation étroite avec la nature. Son cabinet est d’ailleurs construit avec les arbres, telle une cabane dans les arbres mais avec un niveau de complexité plus élevé. En effet, les arbres, qui porte le bâtiment traverse l’intérieur de celui-ci à l’état brut soulevant de nombreux challenges d’un point de vue de l’étanchéité. Construire en bois sur un centre forestier tombe sous le sens, ce qui n’était pas le cas des précédents bâtiments du parc. Cependant construire avec les bois sur place, c’est une tout autre question. Ce détail était très important pour la maîtrise d’ouvrage. De plus, outre le caractère matériel à gérer, il a également fallu manager une équipe non qualifiée, car ce centre n’a pas été construit par des professionnels mais par des bénévoles et des apprentis en menuiserie. Remarquons que ce chantier aura été très formateur auprès des personnes qui l’ont construit.
Le réfectoire
Le premier bâtiment est assez simple, il s’agit d’un petit réfectoire avec une cuisine adossé pour les ouvriers du centre complété par un vestiaire. Celui-ci n’est pas moins élégant avec sa cassure au niveau des pans de toiture et ses pignons en polycarbonate. L’angle du pli de couverture a été déterminé pour laisser passer la lumière naturelle en hiver dans la cour qui se situe derrière celui-ci. L’enveloppe du bâtiment a été réalisée avec du chêne. Une fois à l’intérieur, c’est la simplicité du lieu qui marque, les murs sont habillés de contreplaqué, la cuisine est d’une grande sobriété mais efficace, à l’instar du robinet en cuivre de la cuisine.
Le hangar matériel
Avant la réalisation de ce bâtiment, les outils étaient dispersés aux quatre coins du site. L’enjeu de cette construction était donc de résoudre ce désordre quotidien qui faisait perdre beaucoup de temps aux ouvriers du parc. La forme de celui-ci, rectangulaire est tout ce qui il y a de plus classique. Pour les grandes charpentes, on a tendance à utiliser du bois lamellé collé, ici, les architectes se sont servis d’arbres de près de 140 ans. Certaines poutres atteignent les 20 mètres de long ! Elles ont été coupées et taillées sur place, la coupe s’est d’ailleurs faites à la fin de la période de conception des bâtiments. On remarquera aussi que le bardage a reçu un soin particulier avec la création de relief pour mieux l’ancrer dans son site naturel.
Les choix techniques
La charpente est construite avec de pins corses avec des sections de 300×425 mm. Comme vous pouvez le voir dans la fiche projet où de nombreux détails techniques de construction sont disponibles, la structure a été renforcée par des techniques modernes. Ce besoin résulte d’un fort impact de prise au vent dans la conception de la toiture, en effet, le bâtiment possède une toiture légère avec de grandes ouvertures au niveau des murs.
